Once More

by Friedrich Nietzsche, translated by Peter Saint-Andre

O Man, awake!
What does the deepest midnight say?
"I sleep, I sleep,
From deepest dreams do I awake:
The world is deep,
Much deeper than the day can know.
Deep is its woe,
Joy — deeper than heart's injury.
Woe says: away!
But joy still wants eternity,
All joy wants deep eternity!"

(Translation of "Zarathustra's Roundelay", Thus Spoke Zarathustra, Book IV, ยง12 "The Drunken Song")
