The Sovereign Individual

by Peter Saint-Andre

To be autonomous and free
I need to have a lasting will,
A confidence that I fulfill
The highest human destiny.

This ripest fruit emerges late:
It represents my finest flower
And celebrates a settled power
To master both myself and fate,

To liberate myself — unique
And free from morals of a clan.
I thus affirm the right of man
To live as one alone shall seek.
