(politics) The original meaning meaning of liberalism is an emphasis on the freedom and rights of the individual (sometimes called "classical liberalism"). Although in America the word now refers to a kind of egalitarianism or even democratic socialism, in other parts of the world it still refers to something like political libertarianism.
