optimism

[From Latin optimus: best.]

  1. (metaphysics) Specifically, the belief of Leibniz (1646-1716) that this is "the best of all possible worlds". More generally, the view (opposed to pessimism) that knowledge and happiness are possible to human beings; in this sense, for instance, eudaimonism is a form of optimism.
