pacifism

[From Latin pax: peace.]

  1. (politics) The doctrine that the highest political or social value is peace. Another meaning of pacifism - connected with the actions and views of reformers like Henry David Thoreau (1817-1862), Mahatma Gandhi (1869-1948), and Martin Luther King (1929-1968) - is the ideal of non-violence in human affairs (akin to the moral aspect of anarchism).
