pluralism

[From Latin pluralis: more than one.]

  1. (metaphysics) The idea (opposed to monism) that the universe consists of more than one basic kind of substance (thus dualism is a limited form of pluralism).

  2. (politics) The idea that a system of government should allow more than one political party (roughly equivalent to democracy as opposed to totalitarianism).
