Pythagoreanism

[From the name of the Greek philosopher Pythagoras (6th century BCE).]

  1. (metaphysics) An ancient Greek philosophical movement, perhaps influenced by Zoroastrianism, that emphasized mathematics, numerology, and cosmological harmony. Closely related to Pythagoreanism was the religious sect of Orphism, which held similar views but which was more a form of asceticism.
