teleologism

[From Greek telos: end or purpose, and from Greek logos: reason.]

  1. (metaphysics) The view that ends or purposes are active, causative forces in the world, especially in the realm of biology (opposed to Darwinism) and sometimes history (see historical determinism).

  2. (ethics) Any theory holding that human beings can or should pursue goals such as individual fulfillment (as in eudaimonism).
